Hey, what’s Kanme reading?
Wednesday : 01/29/2025
What’s Kanme reading? Posted every Wednesday Team Kanme Creatives team is here to get you over the weekday blues because we all love comics! It’s true! And we really love Indie comics. Indies offer the most diverse and fearless storytelling among comics, why? Because we can! We are always inspired by the community around us and we want to start recognizing the comics we love to read.
Webtoon special ! I have quite a large list of webtooners who read this blog, this week I am featuring Webtoon comics only, so many great ones to get on our list! I’ll be back next week with comics from my all fav platforms.
Our first recommendation from the Team Kanme is:
Rockin’ Roommate Creator : leochi_Chan
What we know : The 21 year old music student Hikaru finally got the chance to study abroad for a year. Searching for a place to stay, he stumbles upon a suspiciously cheap apartment and promptly moves in. There he notices that the reason why his rent is so cheap stands in the kitchen: His new roommate, the metalhead Seth.
What we love : This was recommended to me on Reddit, I found it to be fantastic. This modern day Odd style slice of life is really relatable, Seth reminds me of the metal guys I went to school with, it seems like they never change, I was in high school in the early 90’s and the metal boys have been living the same metal lifestyle forever. I think that’s why I connected with this comic so much, I knew so many Seths, and was in horrible teenage garage bands with them. Really, this comic has many OCs that you can connect with, they are exactly like people you probably grew up with, your school or University friends. Great art style, beautifully drawn, it’s practically flawless. It’s on Hiatus but I hope the Creator comes back to it! I read it at webtoon, go
read it I think you’ll like it.
The light of your silhouette Creator : chiiyu_tsuki
What we know : “It’s not the version of him captured in the lens that I want to preserve forever, but the person standing right in front of me.” Sebastian is an idol. He needs to collaborate with a photographer for work and is recommended to partner with a studio where Jasper is working. However, from the moment they meet, a strong sense of tension and rivalry arises between them. Their relationship develops as one of mutual attraction yet constant opposition, like the intertwining of light and shadow.
What we Love : What I like about reading Indie comics is that so many of them really put their hearts and talent into everything they do and rival those mainstream comics that could learn a lot from turning away from cookie cutter plot comics. Light, starts out as the typical comic about celebrity and a nobody, but the story will hook you, and the writer did a tremendous job capturing the behind the scenes difficulty fame and fans can cause, the scene where Sebastian is recalling the cruel things thoughtless fans say I have heard these same things from fans in rl towards some of my fav bands, it is true fans can be thoughtlessly cruel when they feel justified in criticizing the appearance, voice or age of a celebrity, that pressure drives a lot of anxiety that being a celebrity already amplifies. The other thing captured so well is when a star cannot be open about who they are because if they were they’d lose their entire career, we think that doesn’t happen anymore but believe me it does. This is a really good BL comic and I hope the Creator gets way more subs, it’s very well done!
God Has spite Creator :nuttonbutton
What we know : Larry’s a grown man with a lot of problems. Life is hard, but he has a secret: He’s a magical boy! With the voice of God guiding him, he has to prepare for a dimensional merge that’ll wipe out all of humanity. As long as he collects energy fragments to enhance his magic, it’ll be fine. However, other magical boys want the fragments for themselves.
What we Love : I love a good tale that turns religion/Armageddon on its ear and creates new lore. I spent my early 20’s working on a similar written project, so I gravitate to these alternative stories of the end of the world as humanity has been talking about mythic beings like Angels, Devils, Magical folk.. Magic Boys – since they started telling stories to one another over a mammoth meat dinner and a campfire. I’m not sure what God’s voice is supposed to sound like, but I always hear the sort of God voice from The Simpsons, it’s very easy to get into hearing the different voices in your head as you read. Is it strange that as I write this Madonna’s Like a Prayer is playing overhead speaker? Religion and pop culture meet again. God has Spite has a good story to tell, lots of mystery, action and makes you understand a little more of why God has limitations, even in our own world, which might explain why he lets only certain Football teams win the Superbowl but doesn’t stop a Tornado blasting through? Not everything is within anyone’s control sometimes, not even God’s. The tale of magic boys trying to lessen the monstrous blow against humanity when the inevitable demonic world comes calling is often fun, tragic, scary and downright dangerous especially when it seems that God is helpless to save even his own. The art is a unique style, highly recognizable on its own, bright colors that have a code hiding within their use, and the character designs are thought through right down to the bow on Larry’s chest. I couldn’t put it down, neither will you, go check it out.
Wergild Creator: wergildcomics
What we know : When an ancient plague resurfaces in Cairo, Egypt, a medical student with mysterious abilities (along with her bitter bodyguard), searches for a cure to protect her city- and the ones she loves.
What we Love : For starters I love Ancient Egyptian and North African history/art, it’s a bit of an obsession when I was younger and it is still there, so when Wergild was recommended, the first thing I said was ‘WOW this looks good!’ I was not disappointed! The drawings of the Gods impressed me, Osiris especially, the storytelling is gripping. It had me reading episode after episode to see where it goes. Really, this whole comic is great especially if you like a mix of modern fantasy webtoon with ancient civilizations, and beautiful art. This is really fantastic. I hope you go and find it as remarkable as I did!
