Hey, what’s Kanme reading?

Wednesday 02/19/2025

What’s Kanme reading? Posted every Wednesday Team Kanme Creatives team is here to get you over the weekday blues because we all  love comics! It’s true! And we really love Indie comics. Indies offer the most diverse and fearless storytelling among comics, why? Because we can! We are always inspired by the community around us and we want to start recognising the comics we love to read.

Every week we’re going to recommend comics we are reading to you.

Our first recommendation from the Team Kanme is:

The Monster We Created Creator : Black Inc Studio.

The Monster

What we know :   Are some people just born as monsters? Or are they created to be monsters? This small town reckless actions would soon answer this question.

What we love:  Another well done Black inc comic, this time the action packed mysterious tale of a gentle giant, misunderstood and feared except by those who love and protect him, set in the same universe of Angel Azul, another outstanding comic that I hope they make more episodes of! I read it on wt.

Broomtail Creator : Just-a-carrot

Broomtail

What we know :  Surly, blind (and closeted) rancher Genzou would be perfectly happy withering his days away on his small ranch in solitude, but his quiet life is brought to halt when a lanky farm boy shows up battered and bruised in his barn one night. Now he’s got an extra horse to wrangle – but this one might steal his heart in the process.

What we love: I was attracted by the cover of Broomtail when I saw it on Nami, the art looked incredible, and I tell you I loved reading it!! Did not disappoint! Now, I don’t like to compare artists/characters normally, but the artist’s style was comforting  to me, reminding me of the late Leiji Matsumoto’s Torchiro from Captain Harlock which was my comfort Anime/manga as a teen. With wonderful round faces and bodies, the designs made me love the characters so much. Great story, great art, real out of the box LGBTQA story that was a delight to read! There is no doubt Broomtail will be a comfort comic read for me; I enjoyed it so much. I read Broomtail on NamiComi !

Old Haunts Creator : jellyfish_ kid

Old Haunts

What we know :Ten years after a messy falling out, five estranged friends are forced back together when confronted by literal—and dangerous—ghosts from their past.

What we love: This has a lot going for it, and just what episodes are setting up to be a  great story. We see a set of young adults making their way through the landmine field of adulthood, making bad guys look innocent, and making poor choices leading to dangerous situations, reflecting on their youth as they see school kids playing hooky. Adulthood isn’t easy when you become disillusioned, the shining fake reality of childhood dulls to the jadedness of adulthood. The art style and color palette are complementary to the comic, and I look forward to reading more. I found this comic on webtoon.

Capricorn Rising Creator : Code the Toad

Capricorn rising

What we know :  Ronnie Reese knows nothing about her family’s history, and doesn’t really care. At least not until she house-sits for her aunt for a few days. Strange dreams and paranormal encounters ensue, and her curiosity grows as they affect her own life in the city. Will facing the family secrets put an end to the malevolent energy sweeping across the estate?

What we love: This comic was already on my list for webtoon, but I saw the Creator moved over to GlobalComix due to wt’s often uneven heavy-handed censorship.  At the same time a reader from the wt subreddit had recommended it to me but panicked that it couldn’t  be found, so I turned them onto the GC version, hope many follow it over too. Comics deserve to be told as the Creator sees them, and censorship stands in the way of the vision, especially in horror, and mature subjects, we’re all adults let us be adults. Anyway! Now on to why this was on my TBR list. I LOVE legacy/cult horror, and I’m originally a Midwesterner so I like stuff taking place in areas I’m familiar with. I lived in Illinois and Indiana in my childhood, maybe us Midwesterners see things in those woods no one else does. The engrossing story telling had me binge reading episode after episode. The art style and design is creative and fits well with the supernatural atmosphere of the comic. I love the story, I am glad it was recommended to me. Come over and read it on GlobalComix! Add it to your library!!
