Hey, what’s Kanme reading?
Wednesday 02/26/2025
What’s Kanme reading? Posted every Wednesday Team Kanme Creatives team is here to get you over the weekday blues because we all love comics! It’s true! And we really love Indie comics. Indies offer the most diverse and fearless storytelling among comics, why? Because we can! We are always inspired by the community around us and we want to start recognising the comics we love to read.
Every week we’re going to recommend comics we are reading to you.
Our first recommendation from the Team Kanme is:
Vesper’s Ocean Creator : Antubis
What we know : During a routine patrol with his crew, captain Deandre Shore is kidnapped by a ruthless gang of pirates. They believe he is the last survivor of the mysterious, lost city of Atlantis, and they intend to find it.
What we love: When I started reading this the 80’s song Bette Davis Eyes started playing, which I thought was symbolic because the lead OC Deandre has quite unusual eyes! I love seafaring stories, British Navy/Nelson’s Navy era, and Pirates like Captain Blood. I even started with a comic about a group of pirate -fighting Vampire Sailors, but it went up into hiatus heaven. This comic was right up my alley, and I got hooked pretty fast, and Chapter 1 part 7 had me in tears (damnit!) hits you in the feels, if this is any indication of how the rest of it goes I’ll need a box of Kleenex and blame my watery eyes on allergies. It’s great art, and the artist shows that a lot of storytelling can be done without words, in just body language. A gaze, a facial expression, the way a body stands even with a turned back, this is something that I also look for in a comic, and in my own work because it can help non- English readers follow the story. I read it on Webtoon but I plan on fully supporting on GlobalComix as the GC version has plenty of space with longer episodes that look much more as the Creator intended. (no MB limit like WT) plus my binge reading doesn’t help views on wt(only counts as 1 view)
Days worth living Creator : Days worth
What we know : A mysterious disease outbreak throughout the Midwest U.S. has forced many survivors to band together in search of safety. But when the dead rise again and can turn the living with a single scratch or bite, how does one continue on in a broken world?
What we love: I normally don’t read Zombie comics because Zombies legit scare me, except Shaun of the Dead and Fido, but both of those are dark comedies so I can contain being creeped out, now dealing with horror Zombies has me hiding behind the couch! I have for years had a nightmare where Zombies take over, and I could never escape them. The dreams only stopped when I finally, after 15 years (yes, it was reoccurring) survived the night of the living dead. That said, I read every page of ‘ Days Worth living’ even though I was going “AHHHH!!!”, I couldn’t put it down, the storytelling was gripping, I couldn’t stop reading. For the comic, the story stands on it’s own, has it’s own lore and can compete with mainstream Zombie fiction, now imagine having a school outing and there’s suddenly a Zombie apocalypse? As a teacher you’ve got kids to protect and B, do they still have homes or parents? C, What do you do if they become Zombies and you can’t save them? This one hits you where it hurts too and is damn good horror! It just started so you can get caught up with it, it will have you on the edge of your seat. I read it on GlobalComix, but NamiComi readers can sub there too!
Court Crush Creator : anianimeart
What we know : A sweet story filled with the youthful energy of two high school volleyball players! Bri is a strong and confident girl who has vowed to never fall in love, but one fateful day, a short boy catches her eye and tosses both of them into a whirlwind of volleyball and romance!
What we love: The Creator does slowly update which is fine with me, I want Creators to update when they can to avoid burn out, believe me I’m a patient reader. And art takes time. This is a big issue I talk about often so I support this Creator fully. Just reading issue one I had flashbacks of school as I too took a volleyball to the face! It’s been ahem over 30 years and I can still see it coming straight for me. The black and white art style is cute and I hope to see more of this comic in the future, no rush Creator! You deserve time to create this well done comic!
Follower Creator : Radio Chio
What we know : Follower is the story of a dubiously ethical secret military project to create the ultimate soldier: super strong, obedient, and immune to disease. Of course, no one asked the soldiers if they wanted to be created, and when they’re suddenly thrust into a world that’s falling apart around them, finding the meaning of existence becomes a matter of day to day survival.
What we love: I liked watching this comic grow and improve from its first chapters. The art style is unique and the designs of the Super Soldiers are out of the box, you wouldn’t think of it, which is why it’s so clever. Some scenes are like a commentary of child soldiers, imagine raising a child to just deliver them to warfare when they don’t even understand what is happening. An experiment in survival when the odds are against you. I read this on NamiComi.
Thank you for reading and as always send me your comics!
