Hey, what’s Kanme reading?
Wednesday : 07/24/2024
What’s Kanme reading? Posted every Wednesday Team Kanme Creatives team is here to get you over the weekday blues because we all love comics! It’s true! And we really love Indie comics. Indies offer the most diverse and fearless storytelling among comics, why? Because we can! We are always inspired by the community around us and we want to start recognizing the comics we love to read.
Every week we’re going to recommend comics we are reading to you.
Our first recommendation from the Team Kanme is:
Regarding dandelions Creator : Kari McElroy
What we know : Jake and Elle have stood together against every obstacle life has thrown at them, in their 30’s Jake is diagnosed with late stage lymphoma. Now they must not only confront mortality head on but also the traumas that they thought they left buried since childhood.
What we love : I’m really surprised that this comic which is updated regularly on Wednesdays on webtoon does not have a bigger following. The intimacy and loving nature of their friendship in this comic shines through, there is drama but it’s not camp, or unrealistic, it’s also not exploitive and dark. I like comics that allow us to explore the connections that make us human- in subjects that sometimes we try not to think about, but it can reach those who might be dealing with these subjects, and they don’t feel so alone. The art is great, more western style and very well done. You can subscribe on Webtoon.
Hawk and Flo: Ice Cream Truck of Doom Creator : HeadyPigeon 4180
What we Know: An evil Ice Cream truck is creating monsters and our one and only heroes Hawk and Flo must team up with two new companions and do what it takes to stop it!
What we love : HeadyPigeon is one of the hardest working- networking Comic Creator in the scene. They always take time to connect and meet creators without asking anything in return, and their goodwill shows in their comics and their work ethic. Now! The comic! I had several moments of literal LOL- phrases like “ Fudge my Juggers!” still gives me a chuckle even writing this( and you laughed too, didn’t you??) . While the art isn’t perfect, it shouldn’t stop anyone from reading this funny, endearing action packed little comic and the others Heady publishes, in fact I think you’re missing out on some great stuff! Leave Heady a comment on GlobalComix tell em ‘Kanme sent you!’
Hang Out Club Creator : Vanille
What we know: Highschooler Richter wants more friends and what a better way than to create a school club? Meet the kids and see how the Hangout Club got started.
What we love : This comic was recommended on Reddit. It’s a cute comedy about a boy, Richter, who wants more friends. The description is written by Richter the ML, which is pretty clever, because I like comics that break the 4th wall sometimes and you’re encouraged to believe the OC is real, which is something I like in my own comic world. The art is sweet, cozy and has funny manga exaggerated comedic pulled faces. We’re still in the beginning so I can’t wait to see how it unfolds. The comic debuted in September so now is a good time to jump in and start reading the episodes, and it looks like the Creator could use some cheerleaders, so sub on webtoon NOW!
Aeria Creator : Drawingale’s comics
What we Know : Mira is your average High Schooler but when a beautiful alien race called Iylven (ill-vin) make contact with the Earth, she finds out she’s not human! Not only that but she’s actual royalty!? More secrets are revealed of her divine nature and her heroine’s journey to thwart evil.
What we love : This has been on my comics to read list for some time, and while it is on Hiatus, I highly recommend it! Finally having the time to sit down and check out this great comic, and please sub to Drawingale’s other comics too! The art is hand drawn, in an old school 70’s manga style that is stand alone and maybe a nod to my teenage idol Leiji Matsumoto? My little heart hopes so! Hand colored in soft tones on textured paper gives a warmth to the art that sometimes escapes digital, the designs are futuristic space-age, The story follows Mira and her meeting the new transfers to their school, while it’s a sci-fi high school comic it has drama, secrecy, danger, curses and alien magic. It’s well written and I read about 25 chapters in a binge, it reminded me of the comics I loved as a teen and also created, that good deep soul feeling you get when you read something that still feels like home. You can read on GlobalComix!
